Frequently Asked Questions

How can I find out more?

The easiest way to begin to participate in the Somers Congregational Church is to worship with us. You will get to see our style and the friendliness of the congregation. You can meet our pastors and other members of the congregation, and perhaps even discover a neighbor or two who is already here.
You can hear a good sermon, and feel comfortable when your kids go off to the Care room or to Sunday school that they are in a safe and caring environment.
You can also be put on our newsletter distribution list. We e-mail the newsletter on or about the last Thursday of every month and would be glad to add you to the list. The newsletter is also on line here.
Either of our pastors would be glad to spend some time with you talking about our church, your spiritual journey and the ways they might fit together. They are happy to answer questions and believe the only bad question is one you do not ask!
Three times a year our Membership Board hosts an Inquirers’ meeting for anyone who would like more information about the church and who might be interested in becomeing a formal member. At an Inquirers’ meeting you have a chance to meet others who are interested in the church, as well as some long term members and to hear more about the mission and ministry.

How can I participate?

As a congregational church we depend on members and friends of the church to make sure everything gets done. There are opportunities to get involved at almost any level you want. There are simple, one shot opportunities to help, there are was to make a short term commitment, to “check things out,” and there are opportunities to make longer term commitments. We hope that every member and friend of the church will find the level of activity and involvement that helps to keep the church alive and that meets their needs as well.

How may I contribute?

We are always happy to receive your contributions. Checks may be sent to the church at PO Box 295 Somers, CT 06071. If you would like your donation to go to a particular fund in the church, please indicate that on the memo line.
Champ’s Place is always happy to accept donations of nonperishable food.  At times during the year we collect back-to-school supplies, new or gently used winter coats and other items.  Please check with teh church office to see what the current need is.

What if I'm not sure what I believe?

You are certainly not alone!  Being a Christian and being a faithful person require ongoing attention to what you believe.  Our pastors are always open to conversations about the faith and questions you may have; they will gladly explore questions with you.  We have Bible study and other discussion groups that meet which address issues of faith where members and friends of the church comer together to explore a growing understanding of faith.  Our pastors offer Biblically based messages each week that help worshipers gain deeper and fuller understanding of the Bible and the faith and traditions of the Christian church.

What if I have not been in church for years?

You are welcome here! Whether you were in church last week or have not been since your confirmation, or have never been, we want to welcome you to share worship with us.
If you grew up in this or another Congregational Church, you are likely to find much that is familiar in terms of the flow of the service, scripture readings and sermon topics, but you will also find much that has changed. People are dressed respectfully, though more casually; for the men open collars far outnumber buttoned necks sand ties; for the women hardly a hat to be seen, and mostly slacks; for kids of all ages school clothes rule in church too.<br>
Each person attending worship is given a program for the morning that has the order of worship with scripture and hymn numbers listed, and parts of the service when the congregation prays or responds together, the words are printed. An asterisk (*) indicates places where the congregation is invited to stand.
